June 1 is about to be here, and that’s a bit of a big date in the NFL calendar.
That’s because cuts that would involve dead cap room after June 1st are split over two seasons. And, as Over The Cap explained, it can only be used on two players per year on a team.
Still, these can be useful — you can create some relief during the summer if you need it. The bummer is you carry that dead cap over to the next year, but at least it’s smaller than it would be.
So let’s dive in with some prime candidates to be cut after June 1 of 2024:
1. CB James Bradberry, Philadelphia Eagles
He was amazing in 2022, but no so much in 2023. With the Eagles focusing on cornerback at the draft, it feels like Bradberry could be out.
2. RB Miles Sanders, Carolina Panthers
Chuba Hubbard was better last year, Jonathon Brooks just got drafted and Rashaad Penny is aboard. Sounds like Sanders is a candidate to me.
3. WR Robert Woods, Houston Texans
He’s got just this year left on his contract, but the Texans’ WR room is chock full of talent. It might make the most sense.
4. WR Kadarius Toney, Kansas City Chiefs
It was a ROUGH season for Toney, to say the least. Given some better depth at wide receiver and perhaps the possibility of getting help when June 1 cuts are done, it might be a good time to let him go.
5. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, New England Patriots
They can spread his $12 million-plus dead cap over two seasons, and that would make sense (say, maybe his former team in Kansas City needs him?).
6. TE Darren Waller, New York Giants
He’s out here performing songs about his ex and considering retirement. So … maybe this would be a good idea.
