England fans celebrated yesterday after star player Jude Bellingham escaped an immediate match ban.

Uefa launched an investigation after he made an allegedly lewd gesture following his spectacular equaliser against Slovakia last Sunday.

The Real Madrid player insisted his reaction was a “joke” directed at friends. But the UEFA probe was ordered to see if it had “violated the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Yesterday the governing body said Bellingham had been fined 30,000 euros (£25,400) and issued with a suspended one-match ban, which will be triggered by a further offence within a year.

And in Dusseldorf England fan Dec Evans, 33, from Blackburn said: “I am delighted that Jude escaped with a fine but it’s a joke they ever considered a ban.

“He had just scored one of the most amazing goal in England’s history, of course he’s going to celebrate.”

He added: “Hopefully do the business again against Switzerland.”

In addition the FA was fined 11,000 euros (£9,000) for crowd disturbances and the setting off of fireworks by fans during the Slovakia match.

Turkish star Merih Demiral has been suspended for two matches over a wolf salute he made towards the crowd at the match in Leipzig on Tuesday.

The salute is recognised as being linked to the far-right movement in Turkey.
