PALENVILLE, N.Y. — The second Ulster County Women’s Golf Association (UCWGA) Junior Girls Golf Championship scheduled for Wednesday, July 10, at Palenville’s Rip Van Winkle Country Club has been canceled due to a lack of interest.

The UCWGA had hoped to draw more participants this year by opening the golf tournament to Greene County residents after the inaugural junior tournament drew only seven players in 2023 at Green Acres Golf Course in Kingston.

But a week prior to the scheduled start of the junior championship in Palenville, UCWGA Junior Committee member Kathy Murphy said the decision was made to cancel the tournament after only eight entrants had sent in their applications.

“I am sad to say that we only have eight girls that have signed up for the tournament on July 10th,” Murphy said in an email. “With that being said, we are going to cancel the tournament on July 10.”

The UCWGA said those girls between the ages of 12 and 17, who are residents of Ulster or Greene counties, would be invited to compete in a 36-hole junior flight in the upcoming July 26-28 UCWGA Championship with prizes and a trophy that would be separate from the 54-hole women’s championship.

The junior golfers from both counties are invited to participate in the second round on Saturday, July 27, at Green Acres and the final round at Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston on Sunday, July 28, to compete for the junior trophy and prizes.

Those juniors (ages 12 to 17) who have filled out an application for the junior tournament do not need to fill out a new one.

Any girl who is an Ulster County resident is welcome to participate in the championship flight instead of the junior flight. That would necessitate playing an additional round, which would include the first round on Friday, July 26, at Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland.

Competitors would need to fill out a new application to compete in the 54-hole event. The cost is $135 for three days of golf, snacks on the course, water, Gatorade, prizes and dinner following the final round.

The cost of the 36-hole junior flight is $105, which includes two rounds of golf, snacks on the course, water, Gatorade, prizes and dinner.

Any junior golfers who don’t want to play in the UCWGA junior event will be refunded 100 percent of the money they have paid for the canceled July 10 tournament.

For refunds or tournament applications, contact UCWGA officials. UCWGA tournament director Diane Myers can be reached at golfordiane@gmail.com or 845-217-7981.

Entry forms can be mailed to Myers at UCWGA Championship, c/o Diane Myers, 55 E. Bridge St., Apt. 123, Saugerties, N.Y. 12477.

Entry form applications must be received no later than Monday, July 15.
