Matt Reid’s best bets for Sunday racing at Hobart (07/07)

Must read

The last month of the 2023/24 thoroughbred season kicks off with a nine-race card in Hobart on Sunday.

The rail returns to the true position, which sees fresh ground on the inside after the rail was +14m for the meeting a fortnight ago.

The weekend weather forecast is cool but with minimal rain, so expect a track in the soft range.

Best bet

Race 1, No.11 – Youraway

Limited race to start the day, which should play into the hands of Youraway for trainer Lindsay Smith. The filly brings a strong SP profile from Victoria and the stable are striking at 42% from their 19 Tasmanian runners this season. Tough day to find a standout, but the Smith/Kersley combination will likely have plenty of admirers in the opener.

Next best

Race 8, No.8 – D’oro Star

Siding with the 3YO D’oro Star to knock off the older horses in the open handicap. He barely put a foot wrong during the Summer Racing Festival, and form around the likes of Wings of Song and Thespian Waters reads very well given what they’ve done in recent months. He should land in the right spot from a low draw and have his chance to see where he fits into the bigger picture of Tasmanian sprinters.

Best value

Race 6 – Gee Gees Me Boy

I’m forgiving the two runs this campaign for Gee Gees Me Boy, who missed the kick first-up, and was wide without cover second-up. Both of those races were in higher grade than Sunday’s contest, and Pires goes on from a low draw with the inside expected to be the best going with the rail back in true. A likely improver if he jumps well.
