Cummings and Gossage’s rate every current AFL coach’s tenure out of 10

Must read

SEN WA’s Scott Cummings and Tim Gossage have ranked each of the 18 AFL coaches.

The pair have produced a rating out of 10 based on what has been achieved at the club during their respective tenures.

The list is named from bottom to top of the current AFL ladder.

Read Cummings and Gossage’s thoughts below:

Adem Yze (Richmond)

Cummings: 3

“It’s not pretty for ‘Ooze’. I’ve given him a 3,” Cummings said on SEN WA Breakfast.

Gossage: 3

“He’s working with a very horrid list. I don’t see any upside and they’re going to lose a lot of experienced players. Martin, maybe Bolton, maybe Baker.

“If you reckon West Coast are in pain, Richmond are worse, but they have got three premierships under their belt.”

Alastair Clarkson (North Melbourne)

Cummings: 3

“I’m not sure if he’s a rebuilder, to be honest.

“In saying that, their last three weeks have been pretty good.”

Gossage: 3

“I agree, they’re rebuilding and they’ve been good lately.

“But 3 out of 10 on the win-loss ratio.”

Adam Simpson (West Coast)

Cummings: 7

“I know that people are going to be angry right now but I’ve given ‘Simmo’ a rating of 7.

“A premiership, fives times in the finals, 11 years, an All-Australian coach, they were second in 2015.

“It would probably be more but the last three years are really going to hurt him.”

Gossage: 7

“The last three years have really hurt him.

“He’s had four years of 70 per cent or better win-loss record in his time, not many coaches do that.

“He’s got a premiership under his belt, 7 out of 10, but it’s been a tough watch the last three years.”

Matthew Nicks (Adelaide)

Cummings: 5

“I thought when he came in they were in trouble.

“They only missed finals last year because of an error by the competition, but they’ve gone a little backwards this year.”

Gossage: 4

“He has a win percentage of 35 which doesn’t wash with me.

“It’s hard in a two-team town but I give him a 4 out of 10.”

Ross Lyon (St Kilda)

Cummings: 2

“Barring the weekend where they were ok and played a different style… I think they actually went against the coaches with how they played.

“They are the worst team to watch play football and they won’t win a premiership.”

Gossage: 5

“They were in the finals last year. They still made it and a lot of clubs don’t.

“You (Cummings) are hard on them. Many people have got it in for Ross.”

Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn)

Cummings: 7

“An absolute 7. He took over a list which ‘Clarko’ destroyed, they ripped it to the bare bones and they are now one game out of the eight.

“They are so far ahead of Adelaide, West Coast, North and Richmond it’s not funny.

“I think Mitchell has been terrific.”

Gossage: 6

“He has a 37 per cent winning record. He’s made some hard calls and he’s coaching well but certainly not a 7.”

Damien Hardwick (Gold Coast)

Cummings: 6.5

“I’m giving ‘Dimma’ a 6.5.

“He’s turned their team into a fortress at home, but as he said they need to grow up.

“Gold Coast are in contention.”

Gossage: 5

“They’re hopeless on the road and he hasn’t turned that round. He has to take responsibility for that.”

Luke Beveridge (Western Bulldogs)

Cummings: 6

“He won a flag but that was nine seasons ago. I think they should be better than they are so a 6 for ‘Bevo’.”

Gossage: 7

“He has a 55 per cent winning record, a premiership, he’s been around a while.

“He doesn’t have many bad ones in regards to years.”

Simon Goodwin (Melbourne)

Cummings: 7.5

“He took them to their first flag in a million years in 2021.”

Gossage: 8

“Apart from 2019 there’s not too many bad years.

“There’s been lot going on at that club and I think he’s done a remarkable job.”

Craig McRae (Collingwood)

Cummings: 9

“Picked up rabble and they were in all sorts of strife and hating the place. Now everyone loves the place.

“Won the flag last year obviously. 9 for ‘Fly’.”

Gossage: 8

“He has a 70 per cent winning record, 4-2 in finals.

“I’m not so sure whether people loving places is enough to give you an extra percentage in coaching, but that’s ok.”

Adam Kingsley (GWS)

Cummings: 6

“They’ve got an elite list, they should be better.

“Ask me again at the end of the year, it might change.”

Gossage: 6

Chris Fagan (Brisbane)

Cummings: 7

“Just can’t get it done. They’ve been really good but he can’t get it done.”

Gossage: 6

Ken Hinkley (Port Adelaide)

Cummings: 7

“Continues to play finals and be competitive, but again, just can’t get it done.”

Gossage: 7

Chris Scott (Geelong)

Cummings: 8.5

Gossage: 9

“Two flags, 70 per cent winning record, he’s a star.”

Brad Scott (Essendon)

Cummings: 7.5

“He has been very good in his two years.”

Gossage: 8

Justin Longmuir (Fremantle)

Cummings: 7

“I’ve given ‘J-Lo’ a 7. Played finals, won a final, but they were poor last year.

“They’re right back in the mix this year and all in a short tenure.”

Gossage: 7

“Leaning to 6 but I’ll go 7 because I can’t be bothered with the Fremantle backlash.”

Michael Voss (Carlton)

Cummings: 8.5

“Picked up rabble and weathered a horrible storm last year when they (critics) were all going berserk again.”

Gossage: 8

“Outstanding. They’re the real deal.”

John Longmire (Sydney)

Cummings: 8

“He’s got a very, very good winning record.”

Gossage: 7

“Been there a long time. Got to do more, this is his year.”
