Popular bakery wins best sausage roll in Australia

Must read

A bakery in South Australia has again been crowned the home of Australia’s best sausage roll after taking out the title for the second year running at the weekend.

Banana Boogie Bakery in Belair took out the title at the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) South Australian Baking Show on Saturday.

Having won the title at the inaugural competition last year, bakery owner Jason Spencer said his team were quietly confident they were going to win again.

In the end, there was only one point separating Banana Boogie from its runner-up, with Spencer blaming a change in recipe based on last year’s feedback for the close call.

“We were just trialling a little bit thinner on the pastry and stuff just from the comments we got last year, and some of the things we changed the judges sort of said ‘don’t do that’,” Spencer told 7NEWS.com.au

“So we’ll go back to the way we were doing it.”

Spencer said the bakery received the most praise for the pastry component of its sausage roll.

“The head judge at the end of the night said ‘your pastry is just impeccable’, like he can’t fault it,” he said.

“He said ‘your pastry got you over the line this year’.”

As well as its pastry, BAA executive officer Tony Smith said the sausage roll also won points for its “neutral flavour”.

“Their meat filling was smooth and not dry and the flavour was what we call neutral/balanced,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.

“This is to say that it wasn’t overpowered by salt or onion etcetera.”

Forty-nine different bakeries from all around the country entered 274 sausage rolls to be judged at the weekend.

Rays Patisserie in Carseldane, Queensland came in second place for its sausage roll.

Banana Boogie had several other wins on the day, taking home awards for its chocolate doughnuts, steak pie, light rye bread and vanilla slice.

Its winning vanilla slice beat the one put forward by Victoria’s North End Bakehouse — the reigning champion of the annual Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph.

It also won the BAA’s Australia’s best vanilla slice competition in February this year.

“We’re crossing our fingers that we can actually win the (Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph) this year too,” Spencer said.

The competition is set to take place on August 17.
