Buenos Noches is back in work and Matthew Smith believes the horse is in for a good Spring.
A frustrating Autumn campaign hasn’t swayed Matthew Smith‘s opinion of Buenos Noches, with the multiple Group 1 placegetter back in work after a well-deserved break.
The rising five-year-old entire had five runs in the Autumn, a fast-finishing fourth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) his best finishing position, but Smith is happy with how he’s come back into the stable.
“He’s back in work, looks great. He looks really good actually, he needed a break, he hadn’t had a break for some time so hopefully with that good spell under his belt he’ll come back bigger and better,” Smith said.
“Nothing just landed for us that prep, we were either drawn poorly, it wasn’t a soundness thing, things just kept going wrong but hopefully we can get him back on track this prep.”
Group One placed in the Coolmore Stud Stakes behind In Secret and the Champions Sprint to Imperatriz, the Warwick Farm based trainer is still hopeful Buenos Noches can land that elusive Group One win and enhance a possible stud deal.
“It (gelding) still might happen to him, if he doesn’t come out this prep and win a couple of nice races he probably will get gelded but he looks really well.”
Smith also has five horses accepted at Wednesday’s home-track Warwick Farm meeting, with the market circling World Alliance in the Hyland Race Colours benchmark 72 over 1000m as his best chance, but says the 1000m is a query.
“Absolutely it (1000m) would be. He was in at Kembla (Grange) on Thursday and they called the meeting off over 1200 (metres) and now we’re three weeks between runs. I’d rather be at twelve but we’ll stay at 1000 (metres) for now and probably go back to twelve,” Smith said.
“He’s going good, can’t fault him. The horse looks great. I’m not sure about the heavy track but he’s certainly worked well and is in good shape.”
