Alex De Minaur was unable to grace Centre Court at Wimbledon for his quarter-final clash with Novak Djokovic.
The Australian sustained a hip injury on match point of his previous win over Arthur Fils and it proved too much to take his place in the final eight.
The injury forced him out just hours before he was due to clash with Djokovic in south west London.
De Minaur, 25, suffered a tear in the cartilage between his hip and adductor which could keep him out of action for as little as three and as many as six weeks.
If that is the case it would place his Olympics campaign in doubt.
“I’m devastated but I had to pull out due to a hip injury,” he said.
“A little tear of the fibre cartilage that kind of is at the end or connects to the adductor.
“I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils and got a scan yesterday, and it confirmed that this was the injury, and with a high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court.”
De Minaur says the risk of worsening the injury was too great.
“The problem with me going out and playing is that one stretch, one slide, one anything can make this injury go from three to six weeks to four months,” he continued.
“So it’s too much risk.”
As a result of De Minaur’s withdrawal, seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic will meet 25th-seed Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-final.
The winner will meet either Daniil Medvedev or Crlos Alcaraz in the Final.
In the women’s draw, unseeded Donna Vekic will face Italian Jasmine Paolini while Barbora Krejcikova and Elena Rybakina will also clash in the final four.
