Wild NFL trade proposal sends Colts a superstar wide receiver | Sporting News

The Indianapolis Colts aren’t ones to make massive, blockbuster trades, but one NFL analyst floated the idea of of sending the team a superstar wide receiver.

Even though the Colts have a strong contingent of wideouts that includes Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and second-round pick Adonai Mitchell, a team can never have too many weapons.

This is especially true when the offense is being led by a young quarterback like Anthony Richardson.

That’s why Marissa Myers of TWSN proposed the wild idea of the Colts acquiring Las Vegas Raiders superstar Davante Adams.

Sending “the necessary draft capital to secure a top pick” — as Myers put it — isn’t what general manager Chris Ballard is all about. He did send a first-round pick for DeForest Buckner, but he was 26 at the time and in the prime of his career.

Adams, 31, is still a high-end wide receiver capable of putting together productive seasons as he did in 2023 with a 103-1144-8 receiving line. However, he’s entering the twilight of his career and has incredible cap hits over the next two seasons.

Adams’ contract includes a whopping $44.1 million cap hit in both 2025 and 2026 — that’s not a contract that the cap-conscious Colts will take on.

Unless the Colts can pull off a trade similar to Stefon Diggs where they send a lone future second-round pick and rework the contract to make Adams a free agent in 2025, this isn’t a deal that’s worth it for the Colts.

Adding Adams to the offense would look great in video games and — in theory — it would make the offense better. But the reality of the situation is that the Colts are looking to develop their young receivers, and it’s unlikely they could pull off a Diggs-like deal.

Pittman has proven he can be a strong leader at the top of the depth chart, and the combination of Downs and Mitchell gives the Colts a strong trio at the position.
