Civic officials have sent a recommendation to the chief engineer, local bodies department to revise the estimated project cost.MC officials have sent a proposal to the government, recommending an increase of about 27% in the project cost and expect that at least 23% to 24% increase will be approved. Sources said that a gallery in the basketball court was not originally part of the plan but need for it was felt in view of current circumstances. The cost of maplewood for the floor of the court has also increased. Officials concerned have decided to use Canadian maplewood for quality.Officials said that they did not want to take another risk on maplewood as the contractor had claimed to use maplewood on the floor, which was infested with termites after a few months. Officials said that Canadian maplewood was better in quality and quite expensive, due to which the estimated project cost had increased. An official claimed that in 2021, it was decided to get permission from the local bodies department for enhancement in project cost, so they sent the case to the chief engineer. He said they would get approval and focus on completion of the project.Work on construction of the basketball court is being done under the Ludhiana Smart City Mission. Initially, the estimated project cost was around Rs 11 crore. Work order for the project was given in January 2023 and it was expected to be completed by July 2023. The deadline was extended to June 2024 but was missed again. So far, 40% of the work has been done.
