Nick Kyrgios teases BBC return after Aussie goes down a storm at Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios has hinted that he will return to BBC commentary after his successful stint at Wimbledon. The Aussie was hugely popular among the broadcaster’s viewers during the Championships, providing superb insight into the tournament.

Kyrgios has played in just one ATP Tour match since last October due to a string of injuries. The 29-year-old is due to return to action towards the end of the year, having spent much of Wimbledon on the practice courts with Novak Djokovic.

Despite an impending return to action, Kyrgios has hinted that he wants to return to punditry and commentary.

He tweeted: “Thank you @espn & @BBCSport for the last 2 weeks! We did some special things together… Created headlines & narrated highlights! Can’t wait for more! I’ll be ready… kygs on the mic.”

Kyrgios joked that Carlos Alcaraz’s dominance has given him second thoughts on returning to action. The Spaniard retained his Wimbledon crown on Sunday, defeating Djokovic, and has won three majors in the last 12 months.

Speaking on the BBC’s coverage, Kyrgios said: “This is the best Grand Slam and this is the best tournament in the world. If you win this tournament you go down as tennis immortality.

“Honestly seeing all this makes me want to get back out there that much. I was so close [in 2022] but he (Alcaraz) is going to be there and he’s going to be standing in the way. So I’m not so sure anymore!”

Kyrgios revealed that he plans to play doubles later this year. But he has not ruled out future punditry roles after enjoying his time behind the microphone at the All England Club.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist continued: “I’m going to play some doubles later in the year that’s for sure. I can’t wait to get back out there. Look, tennis is all I’ve done since I was seven years old, I’ve watched it, I’ve played it.

“I feel like I’ve done a relatively pretty good job [for the BBC]. I’ve really enjoyed it, I think me and Tim have made a great team. But yeah I’m as motivated as ever.

“When I was 21 and 22 I was going up against prime Andy Murray, prime Novak, prime Rafa [Nadal], prime [Roger] Federer. If I’m able to get back to where I was in 2022, I feel I’ve got a good chance to knock on the door for a Slam for sure.”
