A new report suggests streaming giant Netflix has made an offer to acquire Kevin Costner’s western franchise “Horizon”.
World of Reel broke the report, alleging that the streaming giant would also partially help in funding the in-production third and in development fourth chapter.
They add that most of the budget would still be financed by outside parties, and the plan would be to release each chapter several months apart on Netflix.
They even suggest that potential plans would be to eventually, if Costner agrees, turn it into an episodic mini-series. No word as to how accurate the report is, and even if such an offer exists there’s no guarantee Costner is interested or satisfied with the terms.
One of Costner’s big pushes for the film was to have theatrical releases for each ‘chapter’ and Netflix has shown little interest in theatrical releases.
Costner may not have much of a choice though. The $100 million budgeted first film landed mixed reviews from critics and audiences, and so far has only pulled in $29.6 million worldwide with 91% of that domestically. It’s looking likely to wrap it theatrical run somewhere in the mid-$30 million range.
Costner previously partnered with Netflix on their original movie “The Highwaymen” to solid success as over 40 million households watched the film during its first month of release on the service.
