The Toyota sedan was rolled in the crash, with all four occupants trapped inside. Witnesses ran to help.

Duong and Haili died at the scene while Duong’s nine-year-old son Justin, who was also seated in the back, was pulled from the wreck.

The young boy was rushed by paramedics to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and is in a critical condition.

The DiDi driver was also taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Duong family have been revealed as members of St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School in Central Bankstown, with the school delivering news of the “tragic” event in an email to parents on Monday.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that the accident being reported in the news this morning involved a member of our school community,” principal Patricia Laidler said.

“Tragically, Hailie (sic) Duong from Year 6 died in the accident along with her father Thai Duong last night.

“Hailie’s brother Justin Duong from Year 4 is in hospital in a stable condition.

“At this time we send our deepest condolences to the whole family as they grieve this loss.”

The school said it would offer its support and care to the family.

“As a school community, we pray for Hailie and her family and she is deeply in our thoughts and prayers,” the school said.

Support has been offered to students, should they need it.

The 52-year-old male DiDi driver was treated at the scene and taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The utility driver, 19, was treated for minor injuries before undergoing mandatory testing at Liverpool Hospital.

The rideshare car was turning right when it was hit by the ute, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

Dashcam footage from the rideshare vehicle had been reviewed, he said.

“I’m satisfied that the traffic control lights were working at the time and that the (rideshare) driver did undertake a right-hand turn and that (it was) clearly visible in the dashcam that there were other vehicles coming in the opposing direction,” McFadden said.

The rideshare driver had a single green light with no arrow, meaning he could turn when it was safe to do so, he said.

Both drivers will be interviewed over the coming days.

A DiDi spokesperson confirmed the rideshare driver was using its platform when the crash occurred.

“We are aware of an incident which occurred during a DiDi trip in Sydney on the evening of Sunday 26 May, resulting in the death of two individuals,” the spokesperson said.

“DiDi will work with law enforcement in its investigation into the incident.

“Our hearts go out to those involved and to those impacted by this incident and will provide support wherever possible.”

‘Tough’ crash scene

McFadden said it was a “tough” scene for police, but officers put their hands up to serve the community.

“We want to help the community and on any given day, help takes a very different sort of perspective,” he said.

“Last night was helping those people involved in the crash.

“We’re very proud to do that work, but it’s something that does take its toll over time.”

Anyone with information about the crash should contact police.
