Carson Bacha and Josiah Gilbert posted 2 and 1 victories to lead No. 6 seed and top-ranked Auburn to a 3-1 triumph over No. 3 seed and ninth-ranked Virginia in the match-play quarterfinals of the NCAA Golf Championships on Tuesday in Carlsbad, California.
George Duangmanee posted UVA’s lone victory, defeating the Tigers’ Brendan Valdes 2 and 1.
UVA’s Ben James and Auburn’s J.M. Butler were tied through 15 holes when their match was stopped.
Auburn advanced to the semifinals later Tuesday to take on No. 7 seed Ohio State. No. 5 seed Florida State and No. 8 Georgia Tech met in the other semifinal.
James tied Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent for second place individually Monday at 2 under, one stroke behind Georgia Tech’s Hiroshi Tai.

CNU’s Weber earns top region honor
Christopher Newport’s Dylan Weber has been named Region VI Pitcher of the Year by D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday.
Weber went 9-2 with a 1.66 ERA and led Division III with a school-record 140 strikeouts.
The Captains’ John Harvell has been selected as D3baseball.com Region Coach of the Year.
Weber and pitcher Brandon Cassedy made the ABCA All-Region first team. Catcher Lincoln Lubsen made the second team, while shortstop Josh Reinhold and reliever Kyle Lewis were on the third team.

- Old Dominion’s Maverick Stallings and Jacob Gomez both made the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team. Stallings hit .500 with a homer and five RBIs, while Gomez went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two appearances.

- Old Dominion women’s soccer coach Angie Hind announced the hiring of Zach Hanson as assistant coach. He previously coached at Eastern Kentucky and VMI and most recently served as the Girls Academy Director at Skyline Elite SC in Charlottesville.
- The Christopher Newport women’s lacrosse team finished the season ranked 15th in the final IWLCA National Coaches Poll. It was the highest finish in program history for the Captains (14-7), who reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
