Feisty VW Golf Mk2 and Mk3 Drag BMW M3 and M5 Down the Half-Mile, Will They Blow?

The Netherlands-based YouTube channel cvdzijden – Supercar Videos takes yet another break from filming the latest prototypes like the Lambo Urus SE or Bugatti Bolide and gives us a bonkers Race 1000 drag-style competition in the newest video feature embedded below.

Race1000 is a famous event organized in Germany – although last year, they also held their first-ever stint in the United States at the Chase Industrial Complex in Beeville, Texas. It has also held very successful events in Sweden and the United Kingdom, all in the same format – with over 1.5 miles of runway, vehicles compete in the roll racing and standing half-mile formats with four classes of racers for the rolls and five for half-mile racing.

The gist of it all is to achieve the highest top speed possible – “anyone who exceeds that speed is automatically in the next higher class,” with class one featuring anything above 200 mph or 320 kph. Naturally, every time Race 1000 organizes an event – in Germany or elsewhere – a lot of exotics and modified cars arrive to compete in the roll and drag racing events.

For example, the latest feature filmed in Germany by this videographer features a lot of the usual suspects: Ferraris, Porsches, Nissan GT-Rs, Mercedes-AMGs, Lamborghinis, and whatnot. There are also many Audi, BMW, and Mercedes models that are modified to compete with these supercars, as well as interesting arrivals like the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk or the Toyota GR Supra.

In fact, embedded below, there’s an entire compilation of them – it’s more than half an hour in length, so we recommend taking the whole lunch break if you want to see it without interruptions. Of course, among the classic participants like the 488 Pista, 911 GT3 RS, M3, M5, and GT-Rs, there were also models that were just ‘classic’ and nothing else. Naturally, these apparitions were the public’s delight – and we can easily see why.

For example, after stuff like the Toyota GR Supra dragging the Porsche 911 Turbo S and losing, the BMW M5 trying to fend off a McLaren and almost succeeding, or the M3 rocking the asphalt next to a Ferrari and delivering a surprising top-speed win, there was also a funny encounter between a Volkswagen Golf Mk2 and an older M3.

The little Golf was actually a secret monster, and while it looked like it could easily blow its heart out trying to catch up to the feisty Bavarian, in the end, it delivered a top speed of no less than 275 kph (171 mph)! But wait, that’s not all, because, after many other ‘usual’ encounters, at the 14-minute mark, another Golf came out to play. This time, a Volkswagen Golf R32 (Mk3) was allegedly modified to produce no less than 950 ponies.

It, too, went up against a BMW – an M5 this time around, and while it didn’t have the best start against the modern machine, it still blew the Bavarian high-performance business sedan out of the top speed water with a 286 kph (178 mph) pass versus its opponent’s 266 kph (165 mph) trap speed! By the way, next up came a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk to fight its way to the top against a white Ford Focus (ST or RS), but this time around, the crazy-fast SUV looked like it didn’t give its opponent the chance to deliver another surprise. Oh wait, the 255 kph (158) versus 249 kph (155 mph) trap speeds begged to differ!
