Winter Fashion Trends: What’s Trending In Australia For 2024

Must read

The Mercury has dropped and those pesky raincloud emojis are creeping onto our weather apps which can only mean one thing—winter is almost upon us.

Thankfully, the change of season (and subsequent rotation of one’s wardrobe) comes soon after Australian Fashion Week, so in addition to inspiration filtering in from overseas, we have the runways and revellers to look to for sartorial inspiration. But this year, the trends we’ve noted and are tipping to take over might just surprise you.

“This winter it is all about your accessories and adding that personal touch to your outfit,” says marie claire Australia fashion editor, Jordan Boorman. “We saw this all throughout Fashion Week with fabulous brooches, ties, coloured socks everywhere we looked. It’s not just about the trends this season, it is about playing with different accessories to complete your look and show off your personality.”

Essentially, it’s less about clothing and more about using accessories to add a fresh, 2024 touch to the pieces you already own. Sustainable, cost-effective and fashionable. What’s not to love?

Scroll on to uncover the biggest fashion trends to know in winter 2024, and where to shop the marie claire team’s favourite pieces.

Big Sunglasses

Gone are the days where A-listers were sliding on shades so tiny they barely covered their eyes.

Instead, the style set are embracing larger frames once again, in myriad shapes and styles. From square, ’70s-style lenses to bubble-shaped “bug eye” styles; when it comes to sunglasses (because yes, they are an essential year-round), this winter, bigger is better.

A Pop Of Pink

While adding a pop of red to your look has proven popular in upgrading an outfit, another colour is creeping in to rival it.

Pops of pastel pink cropped up all through AFW, and have appeared on several runways, including Next Gen’s House of Campbell. Most effective when paired with browns or dark colours, inject some pink into your looks via a bag, socks, belt or tie, or layer a shirt or jumper.

Leopard Print

Leopard print was unavoidable this past summer and its favour has bled into winter, too. With the trend having kicked off thanks to the Wales Bonner and adidas collaboration, as well as the viral Ganni jeans, the once-controversial print to appear on pants, handbags, coats and more.

One more of those famously divisive trends that is back for another whirl this winter: denim on denim.

From all-denim jumpsuits to matching sets, jeans and jackets, and even denim hats—as long as the washes are complementary, you’re good to go.

Ties

While the office siren aesthetic never quite had time to land Down Under before summer wrapped up, a new take on 9-5 dressing has hit our shores.

Taking cues from corporate dads everywhere, it seems the best way to spice up a simple look this winter is by adding a neck tie. With plan, patterned or colourful options available, it’s a trend that’s all-to-easy to tap into yourself.

Brooches

A surprising trend from AFW emphasised the impact jewellery can have in elevating an outfit. Brooches were omnipresent on the pockets, lapels and even handbags of editors, adding texture, intrigue or pops of colour to their looks.

Opt for a statement brooch to grab attention, or stack multiple for a maximalist effect.

Wool and Wool-Look Coats

If leather coats were the outerwear du jour last winter, in 2024 it’s all about wool and wool-look coats. Opt for ones that hit between the knee and ankle (yes, oversized styles remain on trend), and accessorise by belting at the waist or adding brooches to the lapel.

This is one of those trends that’s worth splurging on, as wool coats remain timeless and will surely remain a winter closet staple for years to come. Plus, it’s hard to put a price on keeping cosy.
