Patrons at a bustling Melbourne restaurant have been left shaken up – with some suffering minor injuries – after a car ploughed through the front window during the dinner rush on Wednesday night.

The white sedan smashed through the front window of The Lobster Cave in Beaumaris in Melbourne’s south-east just before 9pm on Wednesday, sending chairs and tables full of plates of food flying.
One table where customers were eating was just inches away from being hit by the vehicle.

Police believe the driver, a 77-year-old man, mistakenly hit the accelerator rather than the brake on North Concourse about 8.45pm.
Several people inside the restaurant suffered minor injuries but did not require further treatment.
The seafood restaurant took to social media shortly after the accident to update its followers.
The steak and seafood restaurant posted footage of the destruction to Facebook.
Smashed plates and scattered chairs can be seen across the dining area.
“An awful and shocking accident has happened where a car ran into our restaurant during service tonight,” they said.
“Thank goodness no one was hurt, one table were inches away from the impact. All customers were immediately vacated, most didn’t even get to eat dinner, all produce is going in the bin and our team are now cleaning up.”
