Uruguayan legend Edinson Cavani announces retirement from international football – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Uruguayan football icon Edinson Cavani has formally announced his retirement from international competition at the age of 37, marking the conclusion of a distinguished career representing his nation.

Cavani, widely recognized by his moniker “El Matador,” leaves an indelible mark on Uruguayan football history, holding the position of the nation’s second-highest all-time goal scorer and third-most capped player.

Throughout his tenure with the Uruguayan national team, Cavani amassed an impressive record of 58 goals in 136 appearances.

His contributions to the team extended across four FIFA World Cup tournaments (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022), with his inaugural appearance in 2010 culminating in a memorable semi-final run and earning him widespread recognition as the tournament’s standout performer.

Cavani’s crowning achievement in Uruguayan colours came in 2011 with a triumphant Copa América victory in Argentina, a testament to his pivotal role within the squad.


In his retirement announcement shared on social media, Cavani expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country, stating, “I have been and always will be blessed to have pulled on this shirt to represent what I love most in the world, my country.”

He emphasized his unwavering support for the team, stating, “Today I’ve decided to retire, but I’ll always follow you with my heart pounding, just like when I played in that beautiful shirt.”

Cavani’s club career has seen him don the jerseys of prominent European clubs such as Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United. Currently, he plies his trade with the Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors.
