New Delhi: England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been banned from playing cricket after being found guilty of breaching the betting regulations set by the England Cricket Board (ECB). He placed 303 bets on several cricket games between 2017 and 2019. Newly formed Cricket Regulator, in their anti-corruption investigation, reported Carse’s betting breaches for which he is banned for 16 months, with 13 of those months suspended for two years.
The 29-year-old cooperated with the investigating body whose decision made him ineligible for selection until August 28. England Cricket are hopeful that Carse’s case can serve as an “educational example” for the other cricketers featuring in the domestic and international circuits.
“We take these matters extremely seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption breach in cricket. We support the Cricket Regulator’s decision and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon’s case. He has co-operated and shown remorse for his actions. We are satisfied that Brydon has shown growth in the five years since this breach and has demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities.
“We are hopeful that his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers,” an ECB spokesperson said.
Carse as Anderson’s replacement?
The ban rules the speedster out of England’s Test series against West Indies, notable for being the last outing of James Anderson in English colours. As England will desperately eye to lock in a pacer to fill the void Anderson will be leaving, Carse can be viewed as an option for his decent performances in the first-class circuit.
Carse has bagged 124 wickets in 47 first-class games at an average of 33.55, including three four-wicket hauls and five five-fers. He made his first-class debut in 2016 for Durham and made his maiden international appearance for England in an ODI in 2021 with the last appearance coming in December 2023. He has played 14 ODIs and 3 T20Is for England.
