The Scotland national cricket team represents Scotland in international cricket competitions. Nicknamed “The Scots”, they play home matches at The Grange in Edinburgh as well as other venues across the country. Scotland first became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council in 1994 after breaking from the England cricket team. Since then, the team has participated in three ODI World Cups and five T20 World Cup tournaments, securing their first win in these events against Hong Kong at the 2016 T20 World Cup. The Scotland cricket team is governed by Cricket Scotland.
The first recorded cricket match in Scotland took place in 1785 in Alloa. However, it would not be until 1865, some eighty years later, that Scotland’s national team played their first full match, defeating the English county Surrey by 172 runs. In 1879, the Scottish Cricket Union was formed, and just three years later, the national team beat Australia by 7 wickets. The cricket union dissolved in 1883, with Grange Cricket Club taking over administration of the game until 1909. Scotland’s inaugural match against Ireland occurred in Dublin in 1888, resulting in an Irish victory. The first match granted first-class status came in 1905 when Scotland hosted the touring Australians, drawing the match under the captaincy of Hubert Johnston.
Before World War II, Scotland also played South Africa, West Indies, an all-Indian team, and New Zealand. In 1948, as part of their England tour, Australia visited Scotland for two matches that proved to be Don Bradman’s final international games. Bradman ended his illustrious career in quintessential fashion, making an unbeaten 123 in Australia’s innings victory. Scotland began competing in English domestic cricket in 1980 in the Benson & Hedges Cup. Three years later, they participated in the NatWest Trophy, securing their first Benson & Hedges win against Lancashire in 1986.
