Perth surfer taken out by gnarly wave in stormy seas

Must read

It’s been a long weekend better suited to ducks, but for a few hardy souls the washing machine waves of Cottesloe Beach were too gnarly to resist.

And on Sunday, it led to The West Australian photographer Ross Swanborough capturing this super shot of the remarkable upside-down surfer taking the fast way to the bottom – and perhaps regretting his decision to hit the waves.

A bit further south, a lone kiteboarder braved the heaving, messy conditions at Leighton Beach while a group of keen fishermen embraced the overcast, windy day to cast out their lines.

A severe thunderstorm late on Saturday brought heavy rainfall, damaging winds and hail to a large section of WA, with Bunbury hit the hardest.

Perth recorded around 43mm of rain between Saturday and Sunday, with a downpour earlier in the week waterlogging plans for WA Day at Burswood Park.

Organisers of the event, Celebrate WA, made the call to cancel on Thursday afternoon after inspecting the sodden grounds which were obviously unfit to host the two-day event on Sunday and Monday.

“We understand the disappointment this may cause and apologise for any inconvenience. The safety of our attendees, staff and performers is our top priority,” Celebrate WA said.

However, celebrations will go ahead in much of WA, with regional centres planning a feast of activities.
