Our horse racing tipster Paul O’Brien gives his selections on what should be a lovely day for racing at Goodwood.
True Wisdom (3pm)
Lightly raced three-year-old out of the Charlie Johnston yard ,True Wisdom came nowhere on her two-year-old debut but left that well behind her when winning at 40/1 second time out at Newmarket.
She proved that wasn’t a fluke in her seasonal reappearance at Kempton last month. Upped in distance for that race, she took second inside of the final furlong, pulling away from the rest of the field but unable to get to the short-priced favourite on that occasion.
A two-pound rise in the handicap for that performance is fair and with the extra furlong in this race expected to bring further improvement, she can take full advantage of the three-year-old weight allowance to win.
Wild Tiger (4.10pm)
Five-year-old gelding Wild Tiger didn’t race at all as a four-year-old after his debut victory in 2022. He had been racing in Dubai to start off this year, where he was very well backed in both his appearances, going off favourite each time. However he only managed to place on each occasion and not reward punters with a win.
He left those performances behind him, however, when he finally rewarded bettors, delivering his second career win three weeks ago at Yarmouth. He should improve for that performance and settle easier. Provided he does, the seven-pound handicap increase will do little to stop him from winning again.
Fair Wind (5.10pm)
This four-year-old gelding has a tendency to be too keen early which can spoil his race. This was the case at Yarmouth in September on his penultimate outing of last season when he came last of ten. The same issue reared its head slightly soon after at Windsor, but on that occasion his sheer ability overcame and he won impressively.
He returned to action three weeks ago at Ascot when being further back in the pack seemed to help him, and he settled much better. Switching to the outside of the field inside the final two furlongs he came through to tackle the leader, who always had just enough to fend him off but the pair came clear of the rest.
A two-pound increase in the handicap for that performance is fair and won’t prevent him from winning if he continues to improve with the ability he clearly possesses.
