Royal Randwick to host 11 races on Saturday

Must read

The feature race was postponed from Rosehill Gardens last Saturday after the final five races were called off when stewards became concerned for jockey and horse safety due to poor visibility and deteriorating track conditions.

The Australian Turf Club reopened nominations for the Lord Mayor’s Cup with 12 of the original 14 acceptors entered again including Waterford, Sky Lab, Williamsburg, Sir Lucan, Sibaaq, Mount Popa, Star Of India and Political Debate.

Another six stayers here entered for the race which has a maximum field size of 16 from the Randwick 2000m start.

Waterford is early TAB Fixed Odds favourite at $4.50 to give trainer Chris Waller a fourth win in the Lord Mayor’s Cup after his successes with Polly Grey (2021), Wu Gok (2020) and Moriarty (2013).

There is a massive 308 nominations for the Randwick meeting including 24 entries for the Listed $200,000 Bob Charley AO Stakes (1200m) featuring last start Takeover Target Stakes winner Semillion, Insurrection, Iowna Merc, Xtravagant Star and comeback sprinter Joyful Fortune.

The Team Hawkes-trained Semillion is the early favourite at $4.50 ahead of Insurrection at $6.

To get through the monster 11-race card, the opening event will need to be run before 10.30am as the final race has to be held before 4.30pm due to fading light.

Meanwhile, jockey Alysha Collett is still recovering from an eye injury she received when struck by a flying clod of mud mid-race at Rosehill last Saturday and has stood down from her three scheduled rides at Kembla Grange on Tuesday.
