Bowlers should prosper in New York
Batters had a tough time in Monday’s T20 World Cup fixture in New York, where Sri Lanka were bowled out for 77 by South Africa.
It could be a similar story when India face Ireland at the venue and backing the highest individual score to be under 69.5 looks a good bet.
India had the benefit of a warm-up match at the Nassau County Stadium last weekend and they restricted Bangladesh to 122-9, chasing a target of 183.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was retired out for 53 but no other player in the match passed 40 and Quinton de Kock’s 20 was the highest score of Monday’s game at the stadium.
South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje did most of the damage against Sri Lanka, taking 4-7 in four overs, and India’s pacemen reduced Bangladesh to 10-3 in the Powerplay overs on Saturday.
India should be confident of striking with the new ball again so Ireland middle-order batter Curtis Campher looks a big price to top-score.
He cracked an unbeaten 72 off just 32 balls against Scotland at the 2022 T20 World Cup and scored 37 and 26 in warm-up matches against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.
IPL hero Starc should be too sharp for underdogs
Australia won the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup and fast bowler Mitchell Starc added an IPL winner’s medal to his collection last month.
Starc took 3-34 and 2-14 in two playoff matches to help Kolkata Knight Riders claim the IPL title and he can continue his fine form against Oman in Bridgetown.
Oman fought back well before suffering a Super Over defeat to Namibia on Monday as they had lost two wickets to the first two balls of their innings, bowled by Ruben Trumpelmann.
Namibia paceman Trumpelmann finished with figures of 4-21, so fellow left-arm quick Starc should be licking his lips at the prospect of taking on Oman’s batters.
PNG can build on positive opening show
Papua New Guinea competed well in their opening game, giving the West Indies some nervy moments during a five-wicket defeat, and they will be targeting a victory over Uganda in Guyana.
The Ugandans were bowled out for 58 by Afghanistan in their first match at a major tournament, losing by 125 runs after the Afghan openers had put on 154 for the first wicket.
PNG opener Tony Ura was dismissed cheaply against the Windies, but he has an impressive record of one century and 14 fifties in 56 T20 international innings.
Ura and captain Assad Vala, who made a dogged 21 in the first game, should outscore Uganda’s openers and PNG struck with the seventh ball of the innings against the West Indies, whose opener Johnson Charles was pinned lbw by Alei Nao.
