E-prescription provider collapses weeks after data breach

Must read

Medisecure released a statement on its website after the breach in mid-May saying the breach involved personal and health information.

Government authorities have since said there did not appear to be any need for people to change Medicare cards.

Until November last year, MediSecure facilitated the delivery of prescription medications through e-scripts, which allowed doctors to send prescriptions to a patient’s desired pharmacy.

When the federal government made eRx the country’s only approved e-script provider, MediSecure halted that part of its service, but the website had remained up to allow patients to access existing documents.

Now, FTI Consulting have been appointed as voluntary administrators of MediSecure Limited and liquidators of Operations MDS Pty Ltd.

“We recognise the significant concern and the impact of the recent cyber incident,” liquidator Vaughan Strawbridge said.

“The company has been in contact with the Australian government with respect to providing information in response to that incident.

“Our role as ddministrators and liquidators includes investigating the affairs of the company to identify reasons for its failure, and to examine options that may be available to recover assets for the benefit of creditors of the companies.

“We will be speaking to the Australian government about what they need from the company and the next steps in the response to the cyber incident.”

A first meeting of creditors of MediSecure Limited will be held in mid-June.

Late last week, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said she had asked MediSecure “as a matter of urgency” to clarify what personal information had been taken, and to notify the people affected.

“It has taken an unacceptably long time for Medisecure to provide clarity on the details of data that may have been stolen from them in the recent data breach,” she said.

“I’ve outlined to MediSecure my clear expectation that they get to the bottom of this incident, and communicate that to the public.

“The public would reasonably expect more regular updates on the progress of that process.”
