As president, Ballarat saw many international matches hosted in the city, including the World Cup game between England and Sri Lanka in 1992.

Rex was inducted as a life member of the Ballarat Cricket Association in 1997 and was the first person to be given ‘legend’ status by the association in 2017.

He was presented with an Order of Australia Medal in 2005 and was made a Member of the British Empire in 1976.

In a statement, the Ballarat Cricket Association says Rex had a great love of the game, the way the game should be played and a great empathy for those who administered the game.
