I believe that local Stableford golfers were resting up from the Fall River Mills Golf Tournament last week. On Wednesday, May 29th, only four golfers, including me, showed up at the Stableford tee time. It was fine. We just played that old game called golf. One of the “showups” was local golfer David Sroaf. David wrote a book that was recently published. The book’s title is Green Valley, Solano County, California, A Little Piece of History. Included in the very thorough and exciting history of Solano County is the creation and opening of the Green Valley Country Club golf course. Previously, the course was the world’s largest cherry orchard. The first ball was teed off on the April 1st, 1951. Like Little River, you had to play the front nine twice to complete eighteen holes. Six months after the April first tee-off, the back nine was completed. The book David wrote is available for perusing at the Little River Pro Shop.
On Friday, there were a few more Stableford players, seven total. It is not enough to play the traditional Stableford format, but enough to play the reduced game, with one individual winner and one team winner. I must note that I won first place individually with 39 Stableford points and drew Rita Hanover as the first-place team winner. Once in a while, it happens. It should be noted that Danny Hervilla, a member of the Hervilla family who owns the Little River Inn and Golf Course, was one of the Friday players. Good to see you back out on the course, Danny. Rita Hanover’s appearance with the group is also noted. Mostly, the Stableford group consists of men, but women are welcome, and Rita has played with the group in the past. Rita’s got a swing. Thank you for the first-place partners’ draw. It should also be noted that Chuck Allegrini is working on a sixty-plus round streak of a Carlson. In memory of deceased golfer Jack Carlson, Carlson is shooting a round without a double bogie. Nice Chuck.
During last Friday’s round, Phil Dunn and I got into a golf terms giggle, and we had nothing else to do but play golf. Phil was keeping score, so when he asked me what I had on the 3rd hole, I said, ‘Humphrey.’ Phil scrunched his brow, contemplating what Humphrey meant. “A Humphrey, a Bogart, a bogie, a Humphrey Bogart bogie.” Oh, ok, Phil responded. On hole six, I told Phil I got an SP. “A Southern Pacific?” “No, a sand trap par, an SP.” “NS,” Phil said, nice shot.
Remember, the Little River Women’s Club presents the 3-Club Challenge Tournament next Tuesday, June 11th. The starting time will be 5 pm. Choose the three clubs you will hit the best for this event. At the finish, there will be a blind draw to determine the 3-person team winners. There will be dinner served.
