Queen Camilla’s ‘awkward moment’ with First Lady Brigitte Macron

Must read

France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron appears to have breached royal protocol by attempting to grasp the hand of Queen Camilla after the pair laid wreaths for D-Day.

The incident happened as the world’s media watched on.

In the footage, Camilla lays her wreath and stands waiting for Brigitte to place hers.

Once she is done, Brigitte stands up and steps towards Camilla, reaching for her hand.

At first Camilla deftly avoids the move, but Brigitte reaches for her hand again and holds it for a moment before letting go, the pair standing solemnly side-by-side.

While footage of the moment has been shared around the world, it didn’t appear in an official video that was later released on British royal family’s social media channels.

King Charles and Queen Camilla joined French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer.

The memorial is located at Gold Beach, one of the five beaches where Allied forces landed on June 6, 1944.

The British Normandy Memorial memorial records the names of all those under British command who lost their lives in Normandy between June 6 and August 31, 1944.

The two couples are known to be incredibly close and don’t normally observe royal protocol during their interactions.

That same day King Charles was photographed grasping Brigitte’s hand and kissing it while smiling.

Charles and the French President also made their affection clear, embracing each other and holding each other’s arms over the course of the day.

And Camilla seemed happy to have her hands held by a veteran at the D-Day commemoration.

This year marks 80 years since D-Day, with Charles and Camilla starting their week off with a service in Portsmouth. They were joined by Prince William for this occasion.

Their Majesties were seen wiping away tears, with Camilla particularly overwhelmed, as war hero Eric Bateman shared his memories of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, a pivotal WWII moment that ultimately helped lead to the victory of the Allied Forces.

“Today we come together to honour those nearly 160,000 British, Commonwealth and Allied troops who, on 5th June 1944, assembled here and along these shores to embark on the mission which would strike that blow for freedom and be recorded as the greatest amphibious operation in history,” King Charles said.

“Those who gathered here in Portsmouth would never forget the sight. It was by far the largest military fleet the world has ever known. Yet all knew that both victory and failure were possible, and none could know their fate.”

Prince William also gave a speech, telling the crowd he was “deeply honoured” to take part in the commemorations and help “recognise the bravery” of those “that came from across our nation and from all walks of life to join in the fight against tyranny”.
