Popular salami stripped from shelves at major supermarkets

Ritchies IGA Chief Executive Fred Harrison discussed the “situation” where Coles and Woolworths are “dominating” new sites.

This follows a senate inquiry into price gouging from the major supermarket chains and the bid to increase competition in the market.

“The best thing we can do is to introduce more competition and more variety and more choice – and that is by having more supermarkets including people like Ritchies and other independents occupy these future locations,” Mr Harrison told Sky News Political Editor Ed Boyd.

“To recommend to reverse the onus of proof of dominant companies … is the key.

“Instead of the ACCC having to prove that there’s going to be a lessening of competition. Put the onus back on the chains to prove that there won’t be a weakening of competition.”

Primo Foods is conducting a recall of its Mild Salami with 25 per cent less salt packets due to the presence of an undeclared milk allergen, according to the food safety watchdog. 

The salami has been for sale at Coles and Woolworths stores in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. 

The product has also been available at multiple independent retailers, including IGA supermarkets in NSW, Victoria, SA and the Northern Territory, as well as Brave Logistics in SA. 

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has urged customers with a milk allergy or intolerance to not consume the salami.  

“Any consumers who have a milk allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed,” the food safety watchdog said. 

Affected packets of the salami carry the best before date of July 19, 2024. 

Consumers are being told to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. 

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,” the recall notice read.
