Price will always be a divisive part of the gaming experience, as highlighted by the price tag for a PlayStation exclusive.
Concord is set in a “vibrant original sci-fi universe” that promises to be the next big PlayStation shooter title, to rival the likes of Helldivers 2.
Yet, those plans might already be going awry given the reception to its pre-order price point.
Check out the Concord trailer below.
As shared on Twitter via @Zuby_Tech, Concord will cost $59.95 in Australian Dollars, which works out as $39.99 in US dollars, and £34.99 in the UK.
It doesn’t sound bad, does it?
Compared with £60 launch day costs, no, it doesn’t. However, when compared with other “team-based shooters”, its price makes it stand out from the crowd in the worst of ways.
“Good luck with that,” remarked @PapPap13, “Both Overwatch and Marvel [Rivals] are free to play.”
Someone else commented saying, “$39.99 [is] too expensive […] The game is dead before it’s released.”
For every negative comment you see, there’s also a positive. However, the chorus of Concord being “dead on arrival” is difficult to drown out regardless of how enthusiastically fans try.
Putting the price into perspective, though, it costs the same as Helldivers 2, and thus the price seems like the ideal “sweet spot”.
Whether Concord can live up to the same levels of hype as Helldivers 2 remains to be seen, though it seems unlikely given the mixed reception the shooter is attracting already.
If fans finally relent about the price, the issue of needing a PSN account to play with surely stoke the flames of anger once more.
Even if Concord surprises us all, it’s destined to face no end of criticism and backlash.
Concord is due to release on 23 August. Although there’s still some time before it launches, don’t expect its price to change, as the PlayStation Store has £34.99 advertised everywhere.
