Rogue EMU believed to have caused serious motorcycle crash

Two people were airlifted to hospital following an unusual motorcycle crash involving an emu near Dwellingup.

Police were called to a motorcycle crash in Marrinup, north of Dwellingup, just after 12.30pm on Friday.

A 69-year-old male rider and his 59-year-old female pillion passenger were heading north on Del Park Road on a green Kawasaki motorcycle when it was hit by an emu crossing the road.

The sudden impact caused the motorcycle to crash near the intersection of the South Dandalup Dam access road.

Paramedics and firefighters attended the scene before taking the pair to Dwellingup, where an RAC Rescue helicopter later picked them up and airlifted them to Royal Perth Hospital.

It is believed the man was more seriously injured than the woman, but both remain in stable condition at RPH.

The incident adds to the alarming number of motorcycle crashes on WA roads so far this year, which prompted WA Police in April to launch a major operation cracking down on motorcycle safety.

More than 20 people have lost their lives in motorcycle crashes so far this year — despite making up just 3 per cent of all traffic — as WA’s road toll has reached 80 to date.
