If you’re the type who’d prefer a rolling bag, the most important thing to keep in mind is how many wheels it has, says Audrey Kohout, CEO of luggage shipping company Luggage Forward. “More does not always equal better here,” she adds. “Suitcases with two wheels are typically easier to maneuver and roll smoother than those with four wheels.”

Size

Since airlines can have different size requirements, Kohout doesn’t rely on marketing from the luggage brands alone. “Just because they say ‘carry-on approved’ doesn’t mean your flight attendants will agree,” says Kohout. Instead, be sure to look up the airline you’re flying to check that your bag is within any size restrictions and will fit in the overhead compartment.

For the more practical considerations, Kohout says it really depends on your trip and what you’re bringing with you. For example, “Some bags have separate compartments for shoes that could be great for running sneakers or hiking boots to keep your main pocket dirt-free.”
