Free off-peak travel for seniors

Must read

Brisbane City Council is getting you home quicker and safer by providing free off-peak travel for seniors.

Offering free off-peak travel on Brisbane City Council buses, CityCats and ferries for Brisbane’s most mature go card users is just one of the many ways we’re making Brisbane better.

Free travel during off-peak times will create more opportunities for older residents to move around the city and connect with family and friends, helping seniors to enjoy the great lifestyle and leisure opportunities our city has to offer.

How to travel for free

Make sure you’re eligible

Free off-peak travel is available to eligible Translink senior go card and Seniors Card +go holders. To see if you qualify as a senior and are eligible for a senior go card visit the Translink website.

Have a senior go card

Seniors can apply for a senior go card online via the Translink website or at a go card retailer.

To find out if you need funds loaded onto your go card to access free travel or if your go card can have zero value loaded is dependent on whether you are using the seniors go card or the Seniors Card +go. For more information visit the Translink website or phone Translink on 13 12 30.

Things to keep in mind when travelling

  • You will need to touch on and off with your senior go card or Seniors Card +go to receive free off-peak travel
  • If you forget to touch on or off, you will be charged a fixed fare at the end of your trip. Fixed fares are there to ensure a fair go for all passengers on the TransLink network so remember to always touch on, touch off. Applications to have a fixed fare adjusted can be made online or by phoning 13 12 30
  • If you travel on a combination of Brisbane City Council and non-Brisbane City Council services during the eligible off-peak hours, the free off-peak travel benefit will only apply from the time you tap on/off a Brisbane City Council bus service, CityCat or ferry service. You will be charged normal concession fares for the remaining portion of your journey
  • If your journey crosses over between peak and off-peak times, your go card will be charged based on the time you tapped on. If you touch on or transfer during peak time, the peak fare will be charged to your go card for that trip or leg of the journey. If you touch on or transfer in off-peak time, the off-peak fare ($0 during eligible hours defined above) will be charged to your go card for that trip or leg of the journey
