Pioneer of Australian music TV Andrew McVitty who has died at the age of 68.

The producer, best known for pioneering rock concert series Nightmoves, passed following a short battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Lisa Wang, and step-children Jin, Mei and Wei.

According to TV Tonight, McVitty’s groundbreaking career in music television began in 1977 when, at just 21-years-old, he was tasked with creating an experimental music program for HSV7 Melbourne.

Collaborating with promoter Michael Gudinski and radio DJ Lee Simon, the ‘accidental producer’ had only a week to prepare.

The result was Nightmoves, a weekly late-night popular music series hosted by Simon.

Nightmoves catered to an adult audience with an interest in rock music. 

The show quickly gained popularity and ran on the Seven Network until 1984.

The program featured a mix of interviews, music videos from both well-known and emerging bands, and live concerts with some simulcast on FM radio stations. 

The program significantly boosted record sales for featured bands within days of their appearance. 

Following his work on Nightmoves, McVitty directed music videos for Kylie Minogue in the ’80’s including The Locomotion and I Should Be So Lucky.

He continued to mentor newcomers in the industry and co-produced projects with his wife, Lisa.
