Former Collingwood player Shannon Cox charged over double fatal crash on Brand Highway

A former Collingwood player has fronted court after two people were killed following a crash in Western Australia.

Emergency services were called after reports of a crash between two cars and a road train towing two trailers on the Brand Highway in Cooljarloo, about 170km north of Perth, about 9am on Friday.

WA Police will allege Shannon John Cox, 38, was behind the wheel of the Toyota Prado travelling southbound when it collided with a Suzuki Ignis hatchback travelling north.

The white Volvo road train was also travelling northbound on the same road near the intersection of Waddi Rd.

Two women – the 82-year-old driver and her 83-year-old passenger – travelling in the hatchback died at the scene.

A 12-year-old girl was also injured during the incident.

Five St John ambulances and two RAC Rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene, however, the helicopters were later stood down and not required to attend.

Police have since charged Mr Cox with two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

Both Mr Cox and the 31-year-old male driver of the Volvo truck weren’t injured in the crash.

The Spalding man appeared before Northbridge Magistrates Court in Perth on Saturday.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on June 18 for a bail application.

Major Crash Investigation Section investigators are now seeking information from anyone who might have witnessed the crash.

Anyone with information regarding the crash, or who saw any of the vehicles involved being driven in the time leading up to the crash, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
