Winnington and Short book spots for Paris

Elijah Winnington edges out Sam Short in the men’s 400m freestyle.
Cracking race, neck and neck, before Winnington pulls away in the final 100 metres. 3:43.26 is the time for Winnington, which by his standards, isn’t super quick. Was two seconds faster in April at the Australian championships.
Sam Short reported issues with gastro last week, which might explain his second place. Both are in great position for medals in Paris.

This will be the race of the night.
It’s hard to split Elijah Winnington (heat swim 3:45.72) and Sam Short (heat swim 3:48.66) who have been in sensational form this year.
Short told media this morning he’s been battling gastro in the lead-up, so that’s worth factoring in. The world record (3:40.07) could go this evening and so too Ian Thorpe’s 22-year-old Australian record of 3:40.08.
Both men are animals in the water and hate losing. They’ll pull each other along in what will be a dog fight. I’ll back Short, just. He’s all class but Winnington has a point to prove after his seventh finish at the Tokyo Olympics after going in as the favourite.

Patterson posts strong time to claim 400m freestyle multi-class
Lakeisha Patterson wins the women’s 400m freestyle multi-class, and posts a qualifying time along with Hannah Price in second and Michelle Fawer in third.
“I’m pretty pleased with that. I went out pretty hard this morning, so I just aimed to back it up again tonight,” Patterson said. “It’s always really exciting times to obviously qualify my third Paralympics is exciting.”

Hall on track for fifth Paralympics
Brenden Hall (hopefully) books his spot for Paris 2024 with a swim that’s about four seconds clear of his nearest competitor.
The qualifying time is good, and if the selectors go his way it will be his fifth Paralympic Games.
He’s been part of the Dolphins squad for the past 17 years, but Hall said he’s “still loving every minute of it” and he “still had a little bit of fight left”.
