Rodney Lewis steps down as boys basketball coach at Chapin High School

Must read

Rodney Lewis helped build the Chapin boys basketball program into a statewide power since he was hired in 2018.

But for now, the 53-year-old elected to take some time for himself and his family after resigning from his post as the Huskies coach.

“For me and my family, it’s time,” Lewis said. “The program is in great shape for the next coach. We accomplished a great deal at Chapin, the kids worked so hard.”

Lewis coached several top-notch players at Chapin, including KJ Lewis, Bryson Goldsmith, Brandon Hymes, Manny Flores, Antwonne Holmes and Jayden Leverett.

The Huskies’ past two seasons have been especially remarkable. They narrowly reached the state tourney in 2023 and 2024, losing both times in the Region 1-5A title game. This past season, they won 34 games, and they reached the regional semifinals two other times.

Lewis had two stints at Chapin, spending four years as an assistant coach and then 11 more at Andress. He was an assistant on the 2015 Andress team that went to the Final Four in Class 5A.

“Northeast El Paso has a great tradition of high school basketball,” Lewis said. “There is never a good time to leave. Chapin is a special place to me.”
