The new Emmaus girls basketball coach has some experience leading teams on the hardwood, but also played on the gridiron for Lehigh University.
Avon Mack was approved as the new Green Hornets varsity girls basketball coach on Monday night at the East Penn School Board meeting, according to a news release from Emmaus athletic director Rebecca George.
Mack has been the Moravian Academy varsity girls basketball head coach the last two seasons. The Lions went 17-27 with Mack leading the program, qualifying for the District 11 Class 2A playoffs in 2022-23. He was an assistant coach for Moravian Academy from 2017-2022.
Before beginning his basketball coaching career, Mack competed for the Lehigh University football team, including being part of the Patriot League championship teams in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Mack recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the Mountain Hawks’ 42-35 victory over Delaware on Oct. 16, 1999. In that same game, current Notre Dame football coach Phil Stambaugh passed for 410 yards and three touchdowns for Lehigh.
The new Emmaus coach has led the In The Zone 17U AAU girls basketball team from 2018-2024.
“We are excited for Coach Mack to begin the next chapter in his coaching career as our next girls head basketball coach,” George said in the news release. “The young ladies are excited to get started as they look to pick up from the success of this past season.”
The Green Hornets reached the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game last season as the eighth seed. Emmaus made its first state playoff appearance in 17 years over the winter.
Kelsey Gallagher stepped down as the school’s girls basketball coach in April after leading the program for seven seasons.
