A Kmart shopper has stumbled on a clever hack that transforms two items designed for different purposes into a budget-friendly side table.
The DIY side table isn’t just affordable though, it’s also stylish and creates bonus storage for the living room.
The woman shared photos of the hack with the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia Facebook group.

“This Kmart serving tray and the 38cm linear plastic pot fit like a glove .. perfect for small side table and you could store blanket inside or toys,” she captioned the post.
To do the hack yourself you’ll need the 38cm linear plastic pot, which costs $20 and the white carved tray for $12, that means the entire project costs $32.
The 38cm linear plastic pot is designed to hold plants and features white ribbed detailing.
The white carved tray, meanwhile, is made of MDF, has a diameter of 37cm and has a textured dot pattern.
Basically all it takes to make the side table is popping the tray on top of the pot.

The side table hack was a hit with the Facebook group, attracting 2000 likes and more than 200 comments.
“I love this. Gotta go find me a pot. Have the top already,” one said.
”Wow this looks amazing!!” commented another.
“Amazing idea I killed my plant was in this pot might have to give this ago,” wrote a Kmart fan.

If the white carved tray isn’t your style, a member of the group also tried Kmart’s $19 bamboo lazy Susan, which also fit in the pot but had a slight overhang.
A few people did mention the tray didn’t quite fit perfectly in the top of the pot, but one woman said she eventually managed to make it work.
“Note: So I just did this and the tray can be a little bit fiddly and falls inside. You’ve gotta get it just right. I’m not sure I would put a burning candle on it just in case someone knocks it and the candle falls inside (and you have synthetic or woollen throws it would catch on fire in a second). Otherwise they look absolutely amazing in my hallway which I will use for slippers instead of the shoe rack hack,” she said.
