There are 11 men who have claimed eight or more grass-court titles in tennis’ Open Era, with Roger Federer having won the most events on the surface by far.
Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and Andy Murray are some of the other tennis legends who feature on the list.
Here, we look at the 11 ATP players with the most grass-court singles titles in the Open Era.
=5. Novak Djokovic – 8
Seven of Novak Djokovic’s eight grass-court titles have come at Wimbledon, where he was a champion in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
The Serbian’s only title on grass outside the All England Club came at the ATP 250 event in Eastbourne in 2017, where he defeated Gael Monfils in the final.
=5. Andy Murray – 8
Andy Murray has won a record five titles at the Queen’s Club Championships in London, having triumphed at the Wimbledon tune-up event in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
The Briton was also a Wimbledon champion in 2013 and 2016, while his other grass-court title came at the 2012 London Olympics, where he downed Roger Federer in the gold medal match.

=5. Lleyton Hewitt – 8
Lleyton Hewitt won half of his grass-court titles at the Queen’s Club Championships, where he was a champion in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2006.
The Australian crushed David Nalbandian to win his second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2002. He also claimed titles on grass at the Rosmalen Championships (2001), in Halle (2010) and in Newport (2010).
=5. John McEnroe – 8
John McEnroe secured three Wimbledon crowns in 1981, 1983 and 1984, defeating Bjorn Borg, Chris Lewis and Jimmy Connors in the respective finals.
The American was also a four-time winner at Queen’s Club (1979, 1980, 1981, 1984), while he won his other grass-court title in Brisbane in 1980.
=5. Alex Metreveli – 8
Alex Metreveli, who was a runner-up to Jan Kodes at Wimbledon in 1973, won eight Open Era grass-court tournaments, six of which came in Australia.
The Soviet player claimed titles on the surface in Adelaide (1970, 1972 x2), Melbourne (1971), Sydney (1972), Hobart (1972) and Beckenham (1972, 1973).
=5. Ken Rosewall – 8
Ken Rosewall won the US Open in 1970 and the Australian Open in 1971 and 1972 when the two Grand Slam events were still played on grass courts.
The Australian claimed his other five Open Era titles on the surface in Bristol (1969), Eastbourne (1970), Newport (1970, 1971) and Brisbane (1972).
=5. Rod Laver – 8
Three of the four Majors Rod Laver claimed to complete the calendar Grand Slam in 1969 came on grass courts: the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
The Australian also triumphed at the All England Club in 1968, while his other Open Era grass triumphs came at events in Boston (1968), Baltimore (1969), Sydney (1970) and at the Queen’s Club (1970).
=3. Jimmy Connors – 9
Jimmy Connors won nine of his record 109 ATP singles titles on grass, with four of these titles coming at Grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open (1974), Wimbledon (1974, 1982), and the US Open (1974).
The American was also a three-time Queen’s Club champion (1972, 1982, 1983), while he won his other grass-court titles in Manchester (1974) and Birmingham (1978).
=3. Stan Smith – 9
Stan Smith collected his nine grass-court titles at eight different tournaments, with his biggest triumph coming at Wimbledon in 1972, when he defeated Ilie Nastase in a five-set final.
The American also won titles on the surface in Melbourne, South Orange and Boston in 1969, Nottingham in 1970 and 1974, and at Beckenham and Queen’s Club in 1971.
2. Pete Sampras – 10
Pete Sampras is one of only two men to reach doubles figures in terms of Open Era grass court titles, with his first coming in Manchester in 1990.
The American was a seven-time Wimbledon champion (1993-1995, 1997-2000), while he also triumphed at the Queen’s Club Championships in 1995 and 1999.
1. Roger Federer – 19
Roger Federer is considered by many to be the greatest men’s grass-court player of all-time and he holds a number of stellar records on the surface.
The Swiss is the only male player to win 10 titles at a grass-court event, having achieved this at the Halle Open (2003-2006, 2008, 2013-2015, 2017, 2019).
Federer has won a men’s record eight Wimbledon crowns (2003-2007, 2009, 2012, 2017), while he also claimed the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart in 2018.
