Telstra set to give away thousands of free mobile phones amid network change

Must read

Telco giant Telstra will give 12,000 free mobile phones to customers in “difficult situations” to help them transition to the 4G network, after fears vulnerable people would be unable to contact emergency services when the 3G network shuts down.

Telstra said the phones would be given to priority assistance customers who may require “external support transition” when the network shuts down on August 31.

The shutdown was delayed over fears some customers still connected to the 20-year-old network would be left without the ability to make emergency calls.

The Salvation Army praised the move.

“Ensuring that every Australian, from any background or level of income, can take part in our modern digital society is crucial,” Major Brendan Nottle from The Salvation Army said.

“A phone can be a gateway to social inclusion, community connection and support, and with the upcoming closure of 3G networks in Australia it is important for us to reach out and ensure that this can continue for everyone.”

Customers that Telstra has deemed to be in difficult situations, such as facing financial hardship, recovering from a natural disaster, or customers who depend on a working phone because they are living with a life-threatening medical condition, will be eligible for a free Telstra phone.

“Many of these customers are also over 80 years old and living in regional areas, which can make visiting our stores challenging,” consumer segment executive Marty McGrath said.

“While the majority of customers still using 3G devices are aware and able to take action, we wanted to make sure we’re taking extra care of those who need an extra hand ahead of the upcoming transition.”

Telstra said it would be contacting customers eligible for a free phone in the coming weeks and providing them with instructions on setting up their devices.

There are about 156,000 people in Australia still using 3G network who are being urged to upgrade their devices before the network closure to stay connected.

Phones in need of network upgrades will play a pre-recorded message when making outgoing calls, reminding you to upgrade.

You can also SMS 3 to 3498 (3GXT) to check your if your phone needs updating.
