District Officer Superintendent Graeme Paine says a 34-year-old woman drove a vehicle into a Robb Place address in South Mackay.

“At which point a 31-year-old male from South Mackay approached the vehicle and discharged a firearm.”

Police are providing an update after a man was arrested in South Mackay, Queensland.

The 31-year-old man was arrested after a woman was shot dead and a man suffered non-life -threatening injuries.

After a woman was shot dead, and a man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, authorities made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA).

It follows emergency services being called to a Robb Place address just after 4:30pm on Wednesday.

The emergency situation was declared at approximately 5:20pm, with boundaries encompassing Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street — it is still in place.

Police made the arrest at 7:45pm outside a Bruce Highway business, near Hinton Street in Mackay.

Police have declared an emergency situation, blocking off Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street.(Supplied: QPS)

Members of the public are advised to avoid the area, and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice.

Traffic diversions are in place.
