Son of Billy Brownless lands at local Geelong club in signing coup

The son of Geelong goalkicking great Billy Brownless has joined a local club in the region.

Brownless, 24, returned to his junior club on Thursday for his first training session back and will play his first game of footy in two years against Portarlington this weekend. .

The former Cat last played for SANFL side South Adelaide in 2022, where he managed two games before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Brownless was a father-son selection for the Cats in the 2018 draft but was delisted after three seasons at Kardinia Park.

He has kept busy off the field this year, with his father confirming in May that they would be a father-son duo in the celebrity edition of Amazing Race Australia, which is due to screen later this year.

After taking the 2023 season off footy, Ammos coach Dan Holroyd said he got in contact with Brownless to gauge his interest.

“We reached out to him during the off-season, being an Ammos junior and a one-pointer. He has still got a few mates at the club that he knows from his junior days,” Holroyd said.

“So I reached out to see where he was at, he had a few things of his own going on this year that has kept himself busy, but there was always an interest that, if available, to come back and play for Ammos was something he was keen to do for sure.

“He had a knee injury which he has overcome now but from chatting him I think it was more or less coming back to play at his junior club. He has only played at the higher level I guess for a long time really since juniors – the VFL stuff, the SANFL, the TAC Cup, so to have less pressure, more of a fun approach to footy again was a factor for him.”

Brownless averaged 22 disposals, five marks and five tackles across nine games in his last VFL season as an outside midfielder and should give Geelong Amateur a significant boost.

The third-placed Ammos added forward Luke Hillier to their list from GFNL club St Mary’s earlier this week, but he has not been listed to face the Demons.

But Geelong Amateur will welcome back former VFL gun Tom Gribble back from suspension.
