Former Springfield and Belmont basketball standout Chrissie Herring died Wednesday, according to the Springfield High School Athletic Association. She was 51.
Herring was a Tennessean All-Midstate basketball player at Springfield in the 1989-90 season.
She signed to play at Belmont under former Bruins coach Tony Cross and played a key role in bringing the program into national prominence in its NAIA era. She helped Belmont post a 116-25 record and make three NAIA Elite Eight appearances during her playing career.
In 1994, Herring, a forward, led Belmont to a 32-3 record. The Bruins averaged 92 points per game and won by an average margin of nearly 24 points per game that season.
Herring was a two-time NAIA All-America selection, two-time Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the 1993 NAIA District 24 Player of the Year.
She became Belmont’s all-time leader in scoring and rebounding with 2,450 points and 1,233 rebounds.
Herring shot 67.1% from the field in 1994, which led the NAIA.
She was honored at the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference basketball tournament as Belmont’s legendary player.
In 1996, Herring’s jersey No. 40 was retired and she was named to the All-Striplin Gymnasium team.
She was inducted into the Belmont Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.
