BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WSAV) – A man has been arrested, accused of killing a Brunswick High School football player who was on his way home from practice.

Breon Hartley, 21, of Jacksonville, Florida, has been on the run for over a year.

On June 13, 2023, around 9:20 p.m., officers with the Brunswick Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 2600 block of Johnston Street.

They arrived to find My’Kal Ellis unconscious, lying in the roadway. He died of his injuries at the scene.

A day later, Brunswick Police obtained warrants for Hartley’s arrest on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Detectives asked for help from the United States Marshals Southeast Regional Task Force to find him, but they believed he left the area.

It wasn’t until Thursday that the task force took him into custody in Jacksonville. The details of his arrest weren’t immediately provided.

Hartley now awaits extradition back to Glynn County.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police. Anyone with additional information on the case is urged to contact Det. Anthony Trollinger at (912) 279-2640 or provide tips anonymously through Silent Witness at (912) 267-5516.
