The latest Ford Mustang is already the most extreme and diverse yet, stretching from the 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost offerings all the way to the supercar-rivalling, racing-inspired GTD – but this is only the beginning.
Bill Ford, Executive Chairman of his family’s company, told assembled media at last weekend’s Le Mans 24-hour endurance race in France that the company hasn’t finished adding variants to the seventh-generation Mustang.
“Oh, I think there might be more to come,” Ford said. “But I have nothing to announce. Look, we are not a static business. Nothing stays the same, right? And you wouldn’t expect us to with Mustang either.”
The Blue Oval has stretched the range further than any previous model already, launching with the special edition Dark Horse (an evolution of the previous generation Mach 1) alongside the standard V8-powered GT and four-cylinder EcoBoost variants. The addition of the GTD, which is based on the GT3 racing version of the latest model and built by Multimatic, Ford’s motorsport partner that also built the limited edition GT supercar, is the most extreme take on the iconic pony car ever.

The Mustang has had many special editions over the decades, so there will be no shortage of options for Ford to choose from when it comes to creating future variants. In the recent past both the Mach 1 and Bullitt badges have proven popular spin-offs that play to the heritage of the car. Other previous badges used by Ford for the ‘Stang include the Boss and SVO.
Ford, the great-grandson of company founder Henry, also vowed to keep the V8 engine under the bonnet of the Mustang for as long as allowed by government regulators around the world.
“I love the V8s, but you know, we will progress as the world moves on, but I’d like us to keep the V8 as long as possible and we will,” he said.
