Robot sets world record for solving Rubik’s cube

Must read

Blink and you’ll miss it, but this robot holds the world record for the fastest solution to a Rubik’s cube puzzle.

Mitsubishi Electric’s TOKUI Fast Accurate Synchronized motion Testing Robot (TOKUFASTbot) completed the puzzle in 0.305 seconds, edging the previous record – also held by Mitsubishi – of 0.38.

The team in Japan were recognised by Guinness World Records for the feat.

As well as “high-speed, high-precision” machinery, the robot is equipped with AI technology and a colour-recognition algorithm.

“Since establishing our Component Production Engineering Centre in 2016, we have been developing and manufacturing high-tech motors, power semiconductors and related products,” the centre’s senior general manager Yuji Yoshimura said.

“To demonstrate our technical capabilities in achieving high-speed, high-precision windings, which are key to increasing the productivity and efficiency of motors used in many of our products, our young engineers voluntarily worked to set the world record, resulting in a Guinness World Records title, which has motivated our engineers to further develop their technical skills.”

‘All engines failed’: pilot’s frantic mayday call

In a video posted online of the record-setting robot in action, the initial solution is too fast for the eye to follow.

But slowed down by an incredible factor of 42, the robot’s movements can be clearly seen.
