Popular jockey Craig Robertson hangs up his boots after 40 years. The 56-year-old, with nearly 1500 wins, says 40 years felt right.

“I thought 40 years was enough,” Robertson told Racing.com.

“I haven’t ridden since mid-March and that was the week before my 56th birthday and I just thought to myself I don’t want to be riding when I am 56.

Robertson kept his quiet exit in March a secret. He began riding at 15, scoring his first win on his third try.

Reflecting on his final ride, he chuckled, “I got suspended for hitting it too many times and it run fourth – ironically my first-ever ride ran fourth as well,”

While acknowledging a decline in opportunities, Robertson cherishes his career.

“I loved meeting the people, I rode numerous country cup winners and never probably reached the heights others do but I rode a Group 3 winner, which was a big buzz for Mick Sell, Enchanting Waters.”

Robertson stays in Queensland with his family, embracing a new career in construction.
