Champion A-League coach set to join Premier League giants

Must read

Championship winning former Central Coast Mariners coach Montgomery has been inundated with offers from Asia and elsewhere since parting company with Hibernian after the Scottish Premiership club failed to make the top six last season.

However, FTBL understands, the lure of working alongside Postecoglou – who already counts Socceroos legend Mile Jedinak among his assistants – will prove irresistible to Montgomery, who is expected to be joined at the Premier League club by his trusted sidekick Sergio Raimundo if an agreement is cemented.

The Spurs vacancy opened up earlier this month when Postecoglou’s second in command, the highly-rated Chris Davies, was confirmed as the new head coach of Birmingham City.

It’s believed Montgomery, whose tenure in Edinburgh lasted just eight months amid much upheaval and broken promises on player recruitment by the club’s owners, is slated to slot in as Postecoglou’s nominal number two at a team looking to improve on last season’s fifth placed finish in Ange’s first year at the helm.

Postecoglou has a history of mentoring and furthering the careers of his compatriots, notably Peter Cklamovski and Arthur Papas at Yokohama F. Marinos and Harry Kewell at Celtic.

Cklamovski, who worked under Postecoglou’s wing in Yokohama, is currently in charge at FC Tokyo whilst Kewell, among his coaching entourage at Celtic, has taken the helm at Marinos.

If, as expected, Montgomery is unveiled at Spurs, it’s anticipated success there would ultimately act as springboard to catapult him back into a head coaching position as he licks his wounds after the disappointment of his stint in Scotland.
