Hampton interim head football coach Trent Boykin has filled all but one spot on his coaching staff.
Boykin announced the addition of Joe Dailey and Howard Feggins to his staff on Tuesday afternoon. Dailey spent last season as an offensive analyst at Kansas. Feggins was most recently head coach at Division II St. Augustine’s.
Dailey will serve as Hampton’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, while Feggins will serve as Hampton’s running backs and special teams coordinator.
Dailey, who played quarterback at Nebraska and North Carolina, has logged time as a coach at the college and professional level since his playing days ended in 2007. His first coaching gig came at Buffalo as a graduate assistant, then tight ends coach from 2008-2009.
“Joe Dailey is a teacher and he develops players to their fullest potential,” Boykin said. “He is a student of the game and has gained a great deal of experience on the college and professional levels. He is a great addition to our coaching staff.”
The next two stops came at Kansas in 2010 as recruiting coordinator and Bethune-Cookman in 2011 as quarterbacks coach.
Dailey was at Liberty University as a quarterbacks coach (2012-18) and was the offensive coordinator (2014-18). He was also the offensive coordinator at New Mexico, wide receivers coach at Boston College and spent the 2022 season in the same role for the Carolina Panthers.
Feggins’ tenure as a head coach at St. Augustine’s ended abruptly after the Falcons started 0-6 and he was fired for playing two ineligible players. He filed a lawsuit against the university, which no longer is fielding a football team, in December 2023, claiming he was fired unlawfully.
Feggins was the offensive coordinator at Fayetteville State from 2018-2022. His last Division I gig before Fayetteville State came at Norfolk State, where from 2011-2013 he served as the Spartans’ wide receivers coach and then offensive coordinator.
“Coach Feggins has a wealth of experience as a successful coach on the professional, college and high school levels,” Boykin said. “He is an excellent teacher and instructor and Coach Feggins is a student of the game.”
Feggins has spent time at the Division II level with stints at CSU Pueblo and Wingate and also at the high school level in Kentucky and Ohio. He’s also been an assistant at Miami (Ohio) from 1997-1998 and at Eastern Michigan from 2004-2008.
Feggins was also an assistant at South Carolina State from 2008-2010 and logged two years as a minority coaching intern in the NFL with the New York Giants in 1991 and the New England Patriots in 2003.
Feggins played defensive back at North Carolina and for a year in the NFL with the Patriots.
New titles for others on staff
Boykin told The Pilot in May he planned to likely “promote from within” to find his replacement from offensive coordinator Zack Patterson, who departed for a job at Wisconsin in April.
Boykin did just that and has promoted Bobby Blizzard to offensive coordinator. He will also remain the Pirates’ wide receiver coach. Blizzard has plenty of experience coaching on the offensive side of the ball and even logged a stint as an offensive coordinator at Belhaven (Division III) from 2014-2017.
Two other assistants have had their duties and titles slightly changed under Boykin’s leadership. Kentwan Balmer, hired right before the start of spring practice, will now be the Pirates’ assistant head coach alongside his duties as defensive line coach. Brad Bustle will be Hampton’s run game coordinator on top of coaching tight ends and offensive tackles.
With the addition of Feggins and Dailey, Boykin has one more spot left to fill on his staff. He told The Pilot in May he plans to also hire a secondary coach, which would likely be to fill the void left by Brandon Payne’s departure in April.
